My First Sweater - Zoom





The Beginning Sweater class is perfect for the 1st time sweater knitter, or for those wanting a refresher.  It will begin Thursday, January 13th at 7:00 p.m.; the class will run for approximately 8 weeks and will be conducted via Zoom.  The Zoom sessions will be recorded for playback. ( If Thursday nights are not convenient for you, or you miss a class, you can still view the session.)  You will receive assignments / homework to complete before eash session.  

Tea with Jam and Bread (by Heidi Kirrmaier) is a basic worsted weight unisex pullover, seamlessly knit from the neckline to the bottom hem.  It can be knit with or without stripes, and with or without pockets.   

You will learn: 

  • how to make a swatch / sweater fitting
  • how to follow a pattern 
  • basic sweater construction
  • Yarn over short row shaping 
  • how to add a second color to your sweater (optional) 
  • pocket construction (optional) 
  • raglan shaping

Advanced Beginner Skill Level

Class is conducted via Zoom*.   

Advanced instruction before the class will be sent via email.  Please make sure the shop has your current email on file.  

Each session is recorded for playback on our YouTube channel.  

Please complete the homework before class.  (See below). 


There is no charge for Zoom classes.  We request that you use yearn purchased at the shop.

Instruction for making the sweater. 

Supplies: 

Worsted Weight Yarn  - Blue Sky Woolstok, Rowan Superwash, or Brooklyn Tweed Shelter are recommended.   Amounts needed for sizes: 

XS (bust 33 1/4)  850 yrds 
SM (bust 34 3/4) 900 yrds
M1 (bust 37 1/4) 950 yrds
M2 (bust 39 3/4) 1030 yrds
L1 (bust 42 1/4) 1070 yrds
L2 (bust 45 1/2)  1170 yrds
XL (bust 49 3/4)  1290 yrds 
XXL (bust 53 3/4) 1380 yrds


Size  #7 (or needle needed to obtain a gauge of 19 sts and 28 rows = 4 inches). This will be your main needle. 
In addition you will need:  
  • Needle 1 size smaller than your "main" needle.  This will be referred to as your smaller needle. 
  • You will need 16" circular needles in both your main and smaller needle for the ribbing and upper yoke. 
  • You will need circurlar needles in both the main and smaller sizes that are suitable for your bust/chest measur   

6 stitch markers, each unique (eg.  different colors and/or shapes). 

Waste yarn (small amount for holding sleeve and pocket sts). 

Tapestry needles. 

 

Homework: 

Purchase yarn for your sweater (decide if you want the color block stripes). 

Knit your swatch:   CO 25 stitches on a #7 needle* and knit stockinette stitch for 5 in.  (If you know you are a loose knitter, you many want to use a #6 needle).  If you are purchasing needles for this project, you may wish to wait until after the 1st session to buy needles other than your "main" needle. 

In the first session, we will discuss the swatch and how it will help you to make a sweater that fits.  We will discuss the information that is found in patterns to help you choose the correct size for you.  The information from the pattern and your swatch will allow you to choose your correct size and cast on your sweater.
