transition from winter into spring! This pattern was the most purchased pattern for Jessie Mae in 2025, even
though it was only recently released in November 2025. It has been knit in many beautiful color options.

With this class, you will receive 4 in-person class sessions with Sweater Coach Kay, and you will receive the pattern for FREE with the purchase of the class.

ClassHarvest Flower Sweater by Jessie Mae Martinson

Skill Level:  Advanced Beginner - Intermediate, with prior stranded knitting experience.

Must Know Beforehand: Casting on, knit and purl stitches, principles of stranded knitting, increase and
decrease techniques, swatching in the round for gauge.

Class Sessions:

Week One: Pattern review, knitting from charts, gauge

Homework to complete prior to week one class:
  • Look at the completed projects for this sweater on Ravelry for color inspiration.  Select and purchase your colors.  Upon purchasing the class, you will receive the pattern for free in your Ravelry account.
  • Complete your in-the-round gauge swatch.   You will swatch to achieve the required gauge:
  • Main Needle Gauge:  18 st and 28 row / 4" in stockinette.

Week Two: German Short Rows, yoke pattern discussion, depth of yoke, choice of chart, management of floats, increases in a circular yoke, management of three colors in a round.

Homework to complete prior to week two:
  • Mark your pattern for the size you are making
  • Knit the collar of the sweater and up to "Short Row Shaping." We will have time in class to review the short-row technique and potentially work on your short rows.

Week Three:  Project check and Support.
  • This is a working class and a review of the division of the yoke.
  • Come with questions and your sweater, and we will work together.

Week Four:   Technique used for split hem.  Helpful tips for managing decreases when knitting sleeves.

Instructor: Kay

Supplies Needed:
  • Pattern uses two needle sizes: US6 for ribbing, US 8 for main part of sweater. The designer does not indicate a
larger needle for stranding in the yoke. These needle sizes may change as you adjust to obtain
    gauge.
  • You will want to start with a total length of 16” for the neck or else a magic loop. Cable lengths will be
increased as the diameter of the yoke grows. You do not want to bunch your stitches together as
you do your stranding, as you are more likely to not have a smooth finished yoke. As your stitch
count grows, so should the length of your cable. You will go up to a 32-40" for the body, and either
a magic loop or a small circular for the sleeves.
  • Stitch markers
  • Waste yarn or knitting bands to hold stitches
  • Tapestry needle
  • Cable needle
  • Tape Measure
  • Scissors

Yarn Needed:
  • Recommended Yarn DK weight - LaBien Aimee Corrie Worsted or Wensley Worsted or Juniper Moon Rambouillet
  • Chart with amounts based on yarn and size available at KPS

Homework:

  • Upon purchase of the class, KPS will place your pattern in your Ravelry library.  You are responsible for printing the pattern.   Please review the pattern and bring a physical copy to the first class.
  • Determine the size of the sweater you will be making.

Directions for Swatch:
  • Cast on 30 stitches. Knit six rows to form a garter ridge hem.  It is recommended that you knit your swatch as if you were knitting in the round rather than flat knitting
  • Knit the body of the swatch as follows.  Knit the first three and last three stitches in garter stitch.  The middle stitches are stockinette.  Complete body of swatch for four inches.   Knit six rows to form the top garter ridges.
  • Do a dry measure of the swatch for stitches ____/4 inches and rows ____ / 4 inches.
  • Wet block your swatch.  Do not stretch the swatch, but lay it out and pat it into shape.  Allow to dry thoroughly.
  • Do a blocked measure of the swatch for stitches ______/4 inches and rows _____/ 4 inches.
  • The gauge for the sweater needs to be 16 stitches and 20 rows per 4 inches.

Classes with fewer than three students will be canceled 72 hours before the start date, and participants will receive a full refund.  No refund will be issued for cancellations made 72 hours before class.

Instructor: Kay Maize
Instructor Bio: I began knitting as a teenager when I was mentored by a master knitter in our church. Over the years, I have had periods where I could fit in the time to knit and others when my family and professional career moved knitting to the side. What I quickly found out was you can be away from your craft for years and miraculously it all returns again. Education was a major part of my professional life and I am so glad to have the opportunity to teach and mentor others in my knitting passion in retirement. I have experienced most types of knitting, and thoroughly enjoy techniques of stranding, cabling, lace, and mosaics. In addition to the technical aspects of knitting, I have so much fun in the color world – helping others to select colors for projects they want to do. My closet is full of sweaters, shawls of various sizes and shapes, ponchos, mittens, and cowls. Knitting is a journey that I love being on. Kay has been with KPS for six years. Kay works weekdays and serves as the KPS - Sweater Coach and Come Gnome with us leader.
