Sweater Knit-Along: "Calyx" by Elizabeth Doherty

The "Calyx" sweater Knit Along is designed for knitters with some sweater-knitting experience.  It is knit with DK weight yarn, and is knit from the bottom up, with a simple lace pattern on the front and sleeves.  The sweater has drop shoulder sleeves, with stitches picked up at the armholes and knit down.  There is a lateral braid at the base of the neckline ribbing.

Knitting this sweater will give you the opportunity to learn or practice many skills, including:

  • provisional cast-on
  • 3-needle bind-off
  • picking up stitches
  • i-cord edging
  • lateral braid accent
  • right and left lifted increases (RLI and LLI)
  • wrap and turn short rows
  • the pattern is both written and charted.

Instruction for making the sweater.

Homework:

Choose yarn.  Complete your swatch as per the directions on p. 3 of the pattern.  The suggested needle for the main body of the sweater is a #7, but you need to find the needle that gives you gauge (and a fabric you like).  The gauge you are working towards is 19 sts and 30 rows/4".  Measure the sts and rows in 4", then soak your swatch and lay flat to dry, and measure again.  (The pattern sweater was knit with linen, and it is recommended to tumble dry--only do this if you are working with linen).

Determine a tentative size based on your bust size and the amount of ease you want in the sweater.  The sweater in the pattern picture has about 9" of ease.  The sample in the shop measures 44", which has 5" of positive ease for me (I knit the 3rd size, with a slightly tighter gauge).

Read through the "notes" on p. 3 of the pattern. It has a lot of information about the sweater.
