Goldwing Sweater - Zoom

The Goldwing Sweater class/knit-along will begin Thursday, January 27th at 2:00 p.m. and will be conducted via Zoom.  The Zoom sessions will be recorded for playback. ( If Thursdays are not convenient for you, you miss a class, or need to revisit a technique you can still view the session.)  You will receive assignments / homework to complete before eash session.

Goldwing (by Jennifer Steingass) is a colorwork pullover, seamlessly knit from the neckline to the bottom hem.  You have a choice of knitting either a ribbed neckline or rolled neckline.  The sweater can be knit with DK or worsted weight yarn.  The yoke features stranded colorwork using just 2 colors, with the main color and contrast colors changing place at the midpoint of the yoke.  There is also colorwork at the bottom of the sleeves.  The pattern is very size inclusive, with bust sizes ranging from 36.5" to 67.5".   The sweater is designed to be worn with 3-6" of positive ease.  (Choose a size that is your bust size + the amount of ease wanted.)

Sweater construction: Starting at the neckline, the sweater is worked seamlessly from the neckline down.  The sleeves and body are separated and worked in the round.  The sleeves are finished with colorwork and applied icord.

Sweater features and techniques:

  • stranded colorwork
  • short row shaping on the back (German short rows)
  • yoke construction
  • applied icord
  • invisible increase (yoke)

Goldwing Gauge Swatch:

The needle sizes given in the pattern are only suggestions. If you are a tight knitter, you may need to use larger needles;
if loose, you may need to use smaller needles.

Using size B needle, cast on at least 28 sts.

Work in stockinette stitch, in the round, for at least 35 rows.

(Tutorial: How To: Speed Swatch for Knitting in the Round by The Unapologetic Knitter on You Tube)

Count the stitches and rows in 4”.

Record those measurements.  (Washing the swatch may change the gauge, but if you are not close to gauge, you will want to try again with a different needle size.)

Soak the swatch in cold to tepid water for at least 30 min. Gently wrap in a towel and press out as much water as possible. Lay swatch out flat, gently smoothing it. Do not stretch or “block” the swatch. When it is dry, again count and record the stitches and rows in 4”.

This is the gauge that you will use in determining size.

Notes on gauge:

•You may need to try several needle sizes to get gauge.

•If you get gauge, but do not like the fabric, change needles. (if your fabric is too loose, try a smaller needle; too dense, use a larger needle.) In the 1st class, we will talk about how to choose the correct pattern size if you cannot get gauge.

•You should knit the swatch under the same conditions as when you will be knitting the sweater. Because the sweater is knit in the round, the swatch should be knit in the round. This is because, for many knitters, the tension is often different for knit stitches and purl stitches. When knitting in the round, only knit stitches are used.
