This is a very well written pattern.  Do not feel that you need to have all of these skills to join in--you will learn the skills we go along.

- US 4 circular needle suitable for working small circumferences in the round (inner collar).

Homework: To be completed before the 1st class (October 6th)

Purchase pattern.  Choose yarn.  Complete your swatch.   Measure the number of stitches and rows in 4", then soak your swatch and lay flat to dry.  Once dry, measure again.  Determine a tentative size based on your bust size and the amount of ease you want in the sweater.

The pattern recommends up to 5-10" of positive ease. The sample in the shop is an M, and measures about 44.5" at the bust.  Feel free to come into the shop to try it on! The pattern shows a sweater with 8" of positive ease.

Swatch: (work in the round):  CO  30 stitches.  Knit three rows of garter st at the beginning and end of your swatch to keep it from rolling, but have (5" of the "broken lines 12 stitch repeat SEE PATTERN)  between the garter st borders.  Garter borders are not necessary, but does make for a neater swatch.

K 3 sts, PM (place marker), work 12 sts broken lines pattern, beginning with round 1 PM, work 12 sts broken line pattern again, PM, K 3 sts.   Repeat rounds 1-12 of broken lines pattern, until you have 5 inches.  Finish with three rows of garter st.  bind off.

Make your measurements as much in the center of the swatch as possible.

The suggested needle for the main body of the sweater is a #7, but you need to find the needle that gives you gauge (and a fabric you like).  The gauge you are working towards is 19 sts and 26 rows/4" over the broken lines pattern.    Measure the sts and rows in 4", then soak your swatch and lay flat to dry, and measure again.  If your gauge is "off" go up or down needle size (if you have too many stitches per 4", use a larger needle; if you have too few stitches, use a smaller needle.) The stitch gauge will determine the circumference of your sweater.
